What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is "concentrated focused attention." It is a pleasurable state within a controlled environment, where distractions are reduced. Generally, the body is in a relaxed state, while the sub-conscious mind goes into a highly focused state. While the sub-conscious mind is involved, suggestibility is heightened. When hypnotized a person is absorbed, able to redirect attention any time, aware of surroundings and totally in control.
You might find it interesting to note, it is not always necessary to have eyes closed while hypnotized, but it is encouraged.
What isn't hynosis?
- Hypnosis is not the same experience for every person.
How Does it Feel to be Hypnotized?
Think of hypnosis as similar to being absorbed or daydreaming. The body is relatively still, while the mind is very active. Consider the mind-body state of hypnosis as similar to:
- Reading a great book (the reader's mind is focused on the book and tunes out other things).
- Driving the car in familiar areas (think of "auto-pilot" mode).
- Watching an interesting movie (the mind gets highly involved in the movie).
- Doing a hobby (such as jewelry making or playing chess).
- Daydreaming (fantasizing, imagining something fun, thinking about another time).
- There really aren't bells and whistles during hypnosis, unless you imagine it to be that way!
How Does Hypnosis Work?
Basically, the hypnotist influences the client to more easily accept their own suggestibility, without roadblocks developing from the conscious mind. Hypnosis Is effective because it heightens suggestibility while the person is in a different state of awareness. This is a more receptive "state" of awareness. One could think of hypnotic suggestibility as "receptive learning."
Are Hypnosis Results Permanent?
The effects of hypnosis are cumulative. Research has indicated 21 days are needed to instill new learning, new habits, and beliefs. Thus, the idea that practicing is important to develop skills and abilities is very meaningful. Personal belief and total commitment is also important. Reinforcement is always helpful. That is one reason why self-hypnosis training is usually incorporated into your hypnosis session, and why CD's for home are suggested.
